Hello, my name is Julia Lott. I am the owner and senior manual osteopath practitioner at Active Balance Healing. I am a mother of 3 wonderful children and my lifestyle is characterized by physical activity, a healthy diet, daily meditation and mindfulness practices. I have an extensive medical and educational background in nursing from UOIT and originally began my career as a registered nurse. My passion however has always gravitated towards treating and healing patients with a more hands on, drug free, holistic approach. This realization drove me to cultivate my healing skills and techniques.”
We are located at 322 McDonnel St. Unit 1 Peterborough, ON at the No9. North Clinic on the corner of Reid and McDonnel in Peterborough ON.
Your first appointment generally lasts 75 minutes to allow us adequate time to assess your unique circumstances pertaining to your medical history, your physical, mental and spiritual conditions, as well as touch on trauma and its’ destructive effects on the body and its capability to heal. Following this assessment, we conduct a thorough, head to toe examination. The practitioner will perform hands on palpation to assess joints, muscles, bone structures, fascia and the surrounding tissues. Once the examination and assessment are complete, we will discuss the findings and formulate a treatment plan based on the clients’ individual needs. With the remaining time we will begin treating the problem areas.
Treatments range between 25, 50 and 75 minutes per session. One or several healing modalities can be combined during these sessions to provide a more comprehensive treatment.
In Canada, manual osteopaths can assess and treat most conditions that cause pain and dysfunction but we DO NOT diagnose conditions nor prescribe medications. We combine a thorough history taking, visual assessment, musculoskeletal tests and hands on palpation techniques to pin point the source of your pain and create a tailored treatment plan.
Treatment will be a combination of several facets of Osteopathy that incorporate gentle and firm palpation and stretching of the joints, muscles and fasica. Techniques such as articular mobilization, myofascial release, spinal manipulation, visceral manipulation, muscle energy techniques, light tissue stretching, craniosacral therapy, mobile cupping and Gua Sha will be used.
Yes. To get the best results and allow the practitioner access to treat your body, we ask that you wear comfortable fitting and stretchy clothing such as sport or yoga pants. For the first appointment, it is important that the practitioner is able to perform a thorough visual assessment of any postural abnormalities and note specific landmark positioning.
During your initial consultation, we will outline a unique treatment plan and discuss the expected duration and frequency. Generally, patients will experience improved symptoms after three consecutive weekly sessions. Science has decreed that we make, or break a habit, in 21 days of daily input. Maintenance treatments every few weeks, to achieve lasting results and reduce pain, is strongly recommended as we retrain the nervous and musculoskeletal systems to not pull your body into dysfunction. Treatment frequency could range from weekly to monthly depending upon the clients’ condition and their everyday lifestyle. Just like a visit to the dentist is important for healthy teeth, a visit to the osteopath is important to help maintain balance within the body and ensure restrictions are addressed and removed.
It is our goal to alleviate your chronic pain and dysfunction as quickly as possible with the least amount of discomfort. Some techniques such as the stretching of contracted muscles and joints, the firm massaging of fascial adhesions, and the mobilization of bones and joints that have been stuck in dysfunction, can be somewhat uncomfortable at times. You are encouraged to let your osteopath know if you are experiencing excessive discomfort so that techniques can be modified and an alternative approach can be taken. It is not uncommon for there to be an initial soreness immediately following treatment; this soreness often signifies the initial stages of healing.
The cost of a single treatment can range between 66$, 111$ or 144$ + HST depending upon the length of the treatment (25, 50 or 75 minute).
